COUNTIF vs COUNTIFS: counting with conditions
COUNTIF counts cells that meet one condition. COUNTIFS counts rows where every condition is true at once.
| COUNTIF | COUNTIFS | |
|---|---|---|
| Conditions | One | One or more |
| Logic | — | AND (all must match) |
| OR logic | Add two COUNTIFs | Add two COUNTIFS |
| Ranges must be the same size | — | Yes |
Side by side
COUNTIF
=COUNTIF(B2:B9,"East") → 3
COUNTIFS

Which should you use?
COUNTIFS covers everything COUNTIF does. For “East or West”, add two counts: =COUNTIF(B2:B9,"East")+COUNTIF(B2:B9,"West").
