Common mistakes with AND
AND returns TRUE or FALSE
On its own it only gives TRUE/FALSE. Put it inside IF to return words or numbers: =IF(AND(…),"Yes","No").
Each test is separate
Write AND(D2>3,D2<10), not D2>3<10.
What the error messages mean
Type these slips into Gridwise and this is the feedback you get:
Leaving off the closing bracket
=AND(B4="East",D4>3
Parentheses don’t match. You have 1 opening and 0 closing parentheses. Every ( needs a ).
Text without quotes
=AND(B4=East,D4>3)
Text needs quotes. East isn’t a function or a cell, so Excel can’t read it. If you mean the word, write "East" with quotes.
Questions
What does the AND function do in Excel?
TRUE only if every test is true. The syntax is AND(logical1, [logical2], …).
Why is my AND formula giving the wrong answer?
AND returns TRUE or FALSE: On its own it only gives TRUE/FALSE. Put it inside IF to return words or numbers: =IF(AND(…),"Yes","No"). Each test is separate: Write AND(D2>3,D2<10), not D2>3<10.
Does AND work in Google Sheets?
Most Excel functions, including the core ones on this page, work the same way in Google Sheets. A few newer functions arrived in Sheets later or behave slightly differently, so test it on your own data.
