Common mistakes with AVERAGEIFS

The average range comes first

Like SUMIFS, the range you average is the first argument.

No matches gives #DIV/0!

Wrap in IFERROR(…,"No data") if some combinations might be empty.

What the error messages mean

Type these slips into Gridwise and this is the feedback you get:

Leaving off the closing bracket

=AVERAGEIFS(F2:F9,B2:B9,"East",D2:D9,">3"

Parentheses don’t match. You have 1 opening and 0 closing parentheses. Every ( needs a ).

Text without quotes

=AVERAGEIFS(F2:F9,B2:B9,East,D2:D9,">3")

Text needs quotes. East isn’t a function or a cell, so Excel can’t read it. If you mean the word, write "East" with quotes.
